Tension and Relaxation

 

Dryland training offers many criteria upon which to choose exercises: muscle group (deltoids, pectorals, hamstrings, etc) movement patterns (push, pull) sport specificity (VASA trainer, Stretch Cords).  One additional, yet often overlooked way to classify exercise selection is based on tension and relaxation in swimming.  Legendary strength coach Dan John in his book Easy Strength (along with Pavel Tsatsouline) divides exercises into two types: Grinds and ballisitics.
