Concepts for Hot Weather Training

 

As we turn the calendar to June, hot weather is now upon us in Arizona and is on the horizon in many other places.  Most training accommodations for hot weather are fairly obvious: drink enough, replenish electrolytes, don’t do stupid workouts, and avoid the heat when possible.  In terms of fueling, this post is not the place for recommendations since everyone’s sweat rate and content of sweat is different.   The basic mechanisms behind heat and its effects on the body are also well established  For instance:

The term “mobility” gets thrown around with impunity, yet often without context.  Come on, who doesn’t like “mobility”, just as how can you argue with “functional training”?  However, without proper context, problems arise with attacking mobility in isolation and chasing mobility for mobility’s sake.

More Functional Movement Screen Research

An update on recent Functional Movement Screen research from this year.  Nothing profound but some interesting correlations between FMS scores and BMI, along with new information on interrater reliability.  (For a look at previous FMS research discussion, please go HERE)
